*Cambelt must be replaced at 54,000 miles and again at 108,000 miles, then 162,000 miles. Mazda are very expensive, an independent garage could get it done for upto £150 less!
*At 108,000 miles it would be an idea to get the waterpump changed to, as it is next to the cambelt. Cambelt replacement is expensive due to labour charges so it would save 2 lots of labour charges to get them both done. The waterpump may be Okay, but may start leaking before 125,000 miles, so you may as well get it done.
*Front door courtesy lamps may need new connectors, which are an easy D.I.Y job, this may happen at 5 years or 70,000 miles. Very cheap from Mazda.
*Oil warning light- it may light up when the ignition is turned, but only comes on when car is virtually out of oil. Over 125,000 miles, oil consumption can be high, so check regularly and listen for noisy tappets signalling low oil, dont rely on the light!
*At 150,000 miles or over expect an automatic gearbox rebuild in the fairly near future.
*tyres: 235/45 R17 (Xedos 9 only) are very expensive indeed, but alloys look great! The 15-inch tyres fitted to models before December 1996 are almost half the price but the alloys look bland.
*If your model is after December 1996, check the underneath of the car and the front bumper spoiler for damage, as the car is so low it catches over bumps. Some scratches underneath wont be a problem, but a new front spoiler is costly.
*At over 100,000 miles a radiator hose may leak, but with ours it was the one nearest bonnet so it was a simple D.I.Y job.
*Very occasionally the front door pocket lids may feel a bit loose when opened. On the reverse of the lid there are some screws. Undo these and take off the cap to reveal some loose screws, causing the loose lid feel. Easily tightened!
*Expect to never replace the exhaust (unless the car has been thrashed) and blow indicator bulbs are almost unheard of, which is typical of Mazdas good build quality.
*Expect no other significant problems at all if service history is kept up. Generally the Xedos is exceptionally well built, quote from TopGears used car buyer "More reliable than a BMW..." It likes lots of use, so high mileage shouldnt really be too much of a problem.
